Blog Assignments Week 4

Don't Teach Your Kids This Stuff. Please?
Kids are being introduced to technology at a very early age and at a fast pace. There are many negative aspects to that that most guardians have not recognized. One should understand firmly that kids/students are CURIOUS. They are curious to know and experience all that they hear and/or think that a grown up does. Most of those curious kids have access to the internet. They use that access to browse the web about things that they wish to know. That's why many kids search porn and other sexual activities. Students should only have much access to the internet when they reach a certain maturity level. They should also be guarded while they have that access to the internet.

The ISchool Initiative
Travis believes that all shoule be aware and ready to take on th ISchool Initiative in schools. He believes that the ISchool Initiative is not limited to sources that will make a students' education easier and more convient. Everything that the student will need will basically be there in the palm of their hands in order to complete an assignment. Travis believes that this will save more money and we a more reliable source in the classrooms.
I believe that the ISchool Initiative will teach kids how to take the easy road in life instead of really working towards what they want in life. It is more convient to do school work but it is also an easier way to cheat instead of actually studying. I don't think that grade school students should have that kind of access. They should go through the full process of learning how to solve a problem. It is an easy student for college students to havee. It's very convient to them because most of us have part/full time jobs.

Lost Generation
My first reaction was to believe that this world was coming to an end soon. I instantly thought about my faith in God. I did not question my faith, however I did question other's faith. I did not want to accept the fact that people would put so much faith in technology over themselves and their own family.
I was very relieved when the video began to reverse itself. I loved the fact that it basically what the world would be like if man did not stop trusting technology so much. It also showed what it will be like if we take the world in our own hands and stop giving the world into the hands of a computer. The technology used to present this video was great. I will not be involved in the lost generation.

Eric Whitacre's Virtual Choir
It is amazing at the things that one is able to do via internet. One does not have to be in the same country in order to make a video or any other media of art with another person whom they have never met. Internet access dies not limit the things that humans can do with creativity.

  1. Jasmine,

Travis Allen here from the iSchool Initiative. You bring some very valid points in your blog post in regards to technology in the classroom and my video. I appreciate hearing different opinions, and it is individuals like yourself that are very important to make sure we, as students, are not forgetting the essentials when it comes to learning.

I understand there are many flaws with the concept of iSchool Initiative but that's why my team and I devote ourselves to discovering a balance of using technology in the classroom and maintaining the security of our students. Technology is a part of our world. We can not pretend like it does not exist and teach our students as if it is not out there. I believe it is important for our students to enter the real world equipped with the knowledge and capability of handing what's to come in their professional life. Technology is a very useful tool but also must be used appropriately. I only hope that we can better our students for their future and provide them the best tools for success.

Again, I appreciate hearing your views on the subject.

    Regards,
    Travis Allen

  2. What maturity level? Isn't it our responsibility to teach our kids how to use the internet responsibly? You can be curious about sexuality and "play doctor" as well.

A comment from Travis Allen. Fantastic.

You characterize using iSchool type tools as "taking te easy way" and being lazy. You contend that grade school children will use technology to cheat and that they should first learn how to "solve a problem" before having access to technology. Why would it not be best to learn to solve lots of problems quickly using the most powerful technologies possible. Would you make the same argument about cooking? Use a campfire before you graduate to a stove? Communications? use smoke signals, or even a telegraph, rather that a telephone of Skype. Of course not! Next week there will be an AA#2. When you watch that I will ask a question as to why teachers at all!
